The sacred rule of borrowing
If you take something, bring it back. It sounds simple, but hostels run on an intricate economy of borrowed notes, iron boxes, and chargers.
The unspoken rule? If you borrow a pen, return a pen. If you borrow their charger, return it coiled properly. Mess this up, and your reputation is ruined.
Noise etiquette
Walls in hostels are suggestions, not actual sound barriers. That means everyone knows your playlist, and everyone knows when you pull an all-nighter.
If you're going to be loud, be loud during daylight hours. Nothing unites a corridor faster than a collective hatred for someone blasting EDM at 3 AM.
The communal kitchen
Or whatever corner you have designated as the kitchen. Label your food. It won't stop people from eating it, but it gives you the moral high ground when confronting them.
Hostel cooking is mostly survival: boiling water for Maggi, making instant coffee, and hoping the induction stove doesn't trip the power again.
Bathroom politics
Shower timing is everything. Find the narrow window between 'everyone is getting ready for 8 AM classes' and 'the water runs out'. Guard this information with your life.
Also, never forget your towel. The walk of shame back to your room in a towel is a rite of passage, but not one you want to repeat.
Your room is your sanctuary
It's small, probably dusty, and the bed squeaks, but it's yours. Make it feel like home, because you're going to spend a lot of time avoiding assignments in there.
Hostel life is chaos, but it's your chaos. Embrace it.
