Things Every Fresher Should Know Before College Starts
Nobody knows what they're doing
Not the seniors. Not the toppers. Not even the fourth years with the confident walk. Everyone is figuring college out as they go — the only difference is how much practice they've had at pretending.
Your first week will be a blur of wrong lecture halls and forgotten names. It's fine. It's the most common experience in the world.
Your seniors are people too
The senior-junior thing feels like a big deal until you actually talk to one. Ask a senior which professors to avoid, which mess stall is the good one, or where the photocopy shop that doesn't overcharge is — you'll be amazed at how much they'll tell you.
That's what mentorship actually looks like, by the way. Not a formal thing — just older students telling you the things they wish someone had told them.
Clubs beat extra classes
The most useful thing you can do in first year isn't another certification. It's joining one or two clubs and actually showing up. That's where you meet the people who'll become your hackathon team, your flatmates, and your friends.
Every club is underrated until it isn't. Pick one you're curious about, not one that looks good on a resume.
The first week decides more than you think
The group you eat lunch with in week one has a habit of becoming your college group. The people you meet in orientation are the ones you'll keep bumping into for four years.
So introduce yourself to strangers. It's the one time in college where everyone is also looking for people to know.
Ask the question
Every fresher has the same fear: that asking will make them look dumb. It won't. The person next to you has the same question and is also too shy to ask.
Ask where the labs are, ask what an assignment brief actually means, ask a senior about anything. Asking is the fastest way to stop being a fresher.
